NORTH TRYON
VISION & IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

Charlotte Center City Partners, the Foundation for the Carolinas and the City of Charlotte organized a group of public, private and non-profit partners with the goal of creating a development vision and implementation strategy in the heart of Downtown Charlotte. Because the district is anchored by major cultural, civic, and educational institutions, over 20 stakeholder organizations teamed up to form a partnership to guide the revitalization of the district.

The Charlotte Center City 2020 Vision Plan, completed by MIG in 2011, identifies the North Tryon area as an important opportunity to better connect existing arts and culture institutions; improve safety and perceptions of the area; create additional housing and entertainment options, link the First Ward and Fourth Ward neighborhoods; and catalyze the Applied Innovation Corridor to the north.

Building from this foundation, Charlotte rehired the MIG Team. We created a catalytic urban design and development framework for the 32 block area to link existing cultural facilities, activate the public realm, improve the visitor experience, and create more amenities and housing options for potential residents. A major aspect of the vision is to create a district that builds on its current assets, showcases the great things that are already happening, and facilitates art, creativity and entrepreneurship.*
